The UK could become a hub for smuggling the herbal stimulant khat, European police and politicians have warned. The Netherlands is the latest country to outlaw the sale of the plant, which is now banned in sixteen EU member states and Norway. Khat is freely sold in the UK and observers say the UK's isolated stance could make it the main base for Europe's khat trade.

The New Zealand Police are calling on farmers to keep an eye out for the tell-tale signs of cannabis plots as the latest growing season gets into full swing. With the warm wet conditions over the summer, police say the 2012 cannabis crop will be a bumper one and they're determined to find as much of it as they can.

The governments of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, the Federal Republic of Brazil, and the United States of America signed on January 20, the Integrated Monitoring System for Surplus Coca Cultivation Reduction Pilot Project. This trilateral project gives priority to strengthening international counternarcotics cooperation under the principle of shared responsibility.

A new website PreventTeenDrugUse, developed by the Institute for Behavior and Health, Inc., provides parents, with relevant research on marijuana and other drug use.  It outlines the serious long-term negative effects drug use can have on youth, including lower academic achievement, dropout, mental health problems, and addiction.
